CPS
Child Protective Services
Every state (in the U.S.) has a department within the state government which investigates allegations of child abuse or neglect.
Depending on the state, the agency may be called:
Child Protective Services (CPS)
Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS)
Department of Social Services (DSS)
Or simply Social Services
CPS Changed its name to DCS
In Arizona in 2012,
the agency was called Child Protective Services (CPS)
In Arizona, in 2013,
the agency is now called Department of Child Safety (DCS)
A Little Backstory
In 2013, in Arizona, the Department of Economic Security had a number of divisions. One of the divisions was called Child Protective Services (CPS).
In 2013,
the director of CPS reported to the director of DES
the director of DES reported to the governor
In 2013, over 6500 CPS cases had not been investigated.
The director of DES said he was not aware that there was such a backlog.
In 2014, the Governor abolished (officially closed) CPS.
The governor then created the Department of Child Safety (DCS).
As of 2014,
the director of DCS reports directly to the governor
