  • Learn where you can go - to get help

  • Create a safety plan

  • Create a plan which includes keeping your children safe

  • Record evidence of abuse

  • Set money aside

  • Call the shelter before you go

  • Pursue job skills to become independent

What to Bring
When You Leave

You might want to place these items in a bag
(e.g. backpack, duffel bag, tote bag, etc)
and leave the bag with a trusted friend

Identification

  • Driver’s license or a state ID card

  • Birth certificates for adults and children

  • Social security cards for adults and children

  • Financial information

  • Cash

  • Credit cards which are in your name only

  • Checking/ savings account books

Legal papers

  • Order of protection (also called a restraining order).
    Make multiple copies if possible.

  • Copies of any lease or rental agreements or the deed to your home

  • Car registration and insurance

  • Health insurance cards

  • Life insurance papers

  • Medical records for adult and children

  • School records

  • Work permits/ green cards/ work visas

  • Passport

  • Marriage license

  • Divorce papers. Custody papers.

  • Extra set of house keys and car keys

  • Pictures and sentimental items

  • Valuable items, such as jewelry

  • Safe cell phone
