Insurance
Some agencies do not bill your insurance directly. What exactly does that mean?
Step 1: You call your insurance company. You ask your insurance company a bunch of questions, such as: Will the insurance company pay for eating disorder treatment? Which diagnoses will they pay for? What is your deductible, co-pay, and maximum limit?
Step 2: You attend an intake assessment. You pay for the intake the day you complete the intake. In other words, you pay for treatment up-front. You might use your credit cards, money from your savings account, money from your 401K, or you might take out a second mortgage on your house. You might ask grandparents to help pay for treatment.
Step 3: The agency gives you paperwork (e.g. a treatment invoice).
Step 4: You give that paperwork to your insurance company. Then you wait.
Step 5: Your insurance company will (hopefully) reimburse you.
Step 6: While you are waiting for your insurance company to re-imburse you for the intake, you continue to attend treatment, and pay for services up front, out of pocket.
Step 7: If you run out of money, and can no longer pay for treatment, the agency will probably discharge you from treatment.
