Gila County
Suicide Review Board

In 2023, Gila County created a Suicide Review Board.

In June 2023, the Arizona Silver Belt Newspaper interviewed Jessica Valgento. Following are excerpts from the article.

The Suicide Review Board is composed of local people working together to:

• find gaps in services

• raise awareness of social isolation and loneliness within Gila County

• take steps towards better outreach.

Silver Belt: Who do you hope will serve on this new board? Is there any requirement that board members work in social services – or is any credential or degree needed?

Jessica: “No credential or degree is required. Ideally we will have representation from those who work in behavioral and mental health services, healthcare systems, schools, veteran services, law enforcement, EMS, senior centers, homeless services, faith leaders, and any other community members who have a passion for suicide prevention. It would also be beneficial to have members who have had personal experience with suicide. We expect to meet 4-5 times each year, for about two hours per meeting. This should give us enough time to review at least three cases per meeting. We want to give as many members as possible a chance to attend, so the meetings will be hybrid, in person and on Zoom.”

Survivors of Suicide

Survivors of Suicide (SOS)
is a service of La Frontera EMPACT SPC.
SPC = Suicide Prevention Center

Survivors of Suicide is a support program for persons who have lost a loved one to suicide. The program allows members to have the emotional support of others who have shared the trauma of this event. The focus of the program is on emotional healing and survival.

Help Prevent Teen Suicide

If you or any of your friends are feeling this way and have had thoughts of suicide, the most important thing to do is to talk immediately with an adult you trust. Sometimes friends tell us things in confidence and make us promise not to tell anyone else. You may have done this yourself. Secrets can take on a life of their own and become even more powerful because they’re private. Keeping the secret of suicide doesn’t help anyone - it can actually make things worse. Remember, “Friends Help Friends” – so when someone tells you something that worries you, make sure you tell a trusted adult right away.
