Breastfeeding

Fun fact: Prior to 1900, a woman nursed a baby. In the 1920s, powdered milk was developed. The notion of "feeding with the breast" needed a word. Hence the term "breast feeding." source‍ ‍

Breastfeeding Hotline

The Arizona Department of Health Services has a 24-Hour Breastfeeding Hotline.

Babies do not come with instructions, so it is important to know where to turn for help. Arizona is the only state that offers a 24-hour breastfeeding hotline to its residents.

There are NO income requirements. If a mother has low income and receives DES, SNAP or WIC benefits - she can call the Hotline. If a mother earns too much money, and if she does not qualify for DES, SNAP or WIC benefits - she can also call the Hotline.

Questions and concerns can come up at any time during a mother’s breastfeeding journey. A mom might have breastfeeding questions during the first few weeks or several months after her baby’s birth. The Hotline can support her throughout her breastfeeding journey.

The Hotline is available for the breastfeeding mother and the community that supports her - including her support partner, child care facility, pediatrician, OBGYN, hospital, etc. Mothers and their supportive people may call with any breastfeeding-related questions or pregnancy-related questions.

The Hotline is staffed by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) who is a registered nurse with a background in maternal and child health. This is ideal for those after-hours calls when doctor’s offices are closed; moms and their families never have to feel alone.

Because breastfeeding journeys are unique to each mom and baby pair, the IBCLC can personalize and tailor solutions for each situation.

Common reasons that moms and their support partners call the hotline include:

  • technique

  • mom’s diet

  • milk supply

  • medications while breastfeeding

  • pumping and storing expressed breastmilk

  • sore nipples

  • support when going back to work

  • support when merging back into life as a breastfeeding mother.

The Breastfeeding Hotline has professionals that speak several languages and are ready to take your questions.

Hours: The hotline answers calls 24 hours a day.
